2G Energy at a Parliamentary Breakfast in Brussels

March 18, 2026

At a Parliamentary Breakfast at the European Parliament in Brussels, around 50 participants from associations, institutions, and the political sphere discussed how Europe can design an energy system that is both affordable and secure. Stefan Liesner, Head of Marketing and Public Affairs at 2G Energy, had the opportunity to present a simple yet effective principle for the future of energy: “Affordable and secure energy for Europe through smart sector coupling.”

For us, this was a valuable opportunity to demonstrate that many of the solutions for the energy supply of the future already exist today - often from the innovative European SME sector. At 2G Energy, we have been committed for many years to developing and implementing the combination of decentralized combined heat and power (CHP) and large-scale heat pumps.

The principle is remarkably simple: when sufficient renewable electricity is available, heat pumps use it efficiently. If electricity generation from renewable sources falls short of demand, flexible CHP plants ensure security of supply while also providing heat. This intelligent sector coupling can play a decisive role in keeping the energy supply reliable and affordable while paving the way toward climate neutrality.

Another key element for the energy system of the future is decentralization. Decentralized structures foster innovation, strengthen competitiveness, and enable the rapid and efficient implementation of new technologies. The diversity of technologies and stakeholders is one of Europe’s greatest strengths.

To fully realize this potential, a supportive policy framework is essential. In Germany, the restructuring of power plant auctions and the amendment of the Combined Heat and Power Act (KWKG) present a key opportunity to systematically integrate and strengthen flexible, decentralized solutions within the energy system.

We would like to thank Energiedialog 2050, Chairman Klaus Mindrup, and Member of the European Parliament Jens Geier for the invitation and for organizing such a valuable exchange. We would especially like to thank Tobias Bischof-Niemz from ENERTRAG for his valuable insights, as well as Alexandra Tudoroiu and Hans Korteweg for attending in person.

At 2G Energy, we are always proud to demonstrate in Brussels how innovative concepts and technologies from the European SME sector are helping to shape the global energy system of the future.
