A sustainable waste-to-energy solution

South East Water's Boneo Water Recycling Plant has become the second site within its network to utilise a 2G Cogeneration Engine, creating a sustainable waste-to-energy solution to reduce their operating costs and dependence on electricity. This project is yet another excellent advancement in South East Water's progress to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.

South East Water operates the Boneo Water Recycling Plant in Boneo, Victoria, part of a network already committed to a 45 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2025 and net zero emissions by 2030 under its Emissions Reduction Pledge. Water recycling is an energy-intensive process, and biogas produced on site offers a way to generate power locally rather than drawing solely from the grid, supporting that emissions target. Boneo is the second site in the South East Water network to implement 2G cogeneration, with Evo Energy Technologies engaged to supply and install the equipment.

The installation comprises an avus 500plus CHP unit with a biogas and natural gas blending system, an avus 500plus Gas-to-Power unit running on natural gas only, two H2S activated carbon filters, one siloxane activated carbon filter, a high temperature C-Nox biogas flare, and four Meidinger biogas blowers. Together, the two avus 500plus engines generate low carbon electricity for the plant, with the carbon filtration and flare equipment conditioning the biogas supply and managing excess gas.

Boneo has had the following equipment supplied by our Australian partner Evo Energy Technolgies:

  • 1x avus 500plus CHP with biogas and natural gas blending system
  • 1x avus500plus Gas-to-Power on natural gas only
  • 2x H2S Active Carbon Filters
  • 1x Siloxane Active Carbon Filters
  • 1x High Temp C-Nox Biogas Flare
  • 4x Meidinger Biogas Blowers
