Ecological and economic benefits for the healthcare sector

How a 2G cogenerator revolutionised the energy supply of IRCCS Maugeri, achieving surprising results
Cogeneration proves to be the ideal choice for hospitals and healthcare facilities, which require high consumption of electricity and uninterrupted heat. In the case of IRCSS Milan, the installation of a 2G cogenerator made it possible to cover the entire energy requirement in an efficient and ecological way, offering significant environmental and financial benefits.

Hospitals and healthcare facilities require a large amount of electricity and constant heat all year round. From room air conditioning to medical equipment, the need for energy is essential to sustain the business. However, this comes with significant costs that facilities must address.

The ideal solution comes from 2G cogeneration, which offers efficient and ecological coverage of energy needs.

A tangible example of success is IRCCS Milan, part of the Maugeri Scientific Clinical Institutes, which has implemented a 2G cogenerator in their system. Delivery in October 2022 and start-up in February 2023, the project was managed in collaboration with Alea Energia Srl, promising significant environmental and economic benefits.

Thanks to cogeneration, the structure recorded primary energy savings of 20% (approximately 1750 MWhp/year) and a 21% reduction in CO2 emissions (approximately 300 tons/year), as well as economic savings of 19 % . Compared to the previous situation, in which a gas boiler was used and the electricity came from the grid, IRCCS Maugeri now uses an energy supply from cogeneration which contributes respectively to 52% for the thermal part and 70% for the electrical part.

The implementation of the agenitor 406, a cogenerator powered by natural gas, in 7x3 meter containers, made possible an overall efficiency of 85.3%, with 41.8% electrical efficiency and 43.5% efficiency thermal.

The case of IRCCS Maugeri confirms cogeneration as a winning choice for reducing energy consumption and preventing CO2 emissions, actively contributing to protecting the environment.
